Shrijan Rehabilitation Care Understanding Addiction

Understanding Addiction

Addiction is a chronic, relapsing condition where a person becomes physically and psychologically dependent on a substance or behavior, despite harmful consequences. It affects the brain’s reward system, decision-making abilities, and self-control.

Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is the medical term used to describe a pattern of harmful substance use — such as alcohol, drugs, or prescription medication — that causes significant distress or impairs daily functioning.

Common Substances Involved in SUD:

– Alcohol
– Cannabis (Ganja/Charas)
– Heroin or Brown Sugar
– Cocaine, MDMA (Ecstasy), LSD
– Inhalants (Whitener, Glue, etc.)
– Prescription drugs (e.g., sleeping pills, painkillers, tramadol)

Signs of Substance Use Disorder:

– Loss of control over usage
– Neglecting responsibilities or relationships
– Physical health deterioration
– Mood swings, aggression, or withdrawal
– Risk-taking behavior
– Cravings and withdrawal symptoms
– Continued use despite knowing the risks

What Causes Addiction?

– Genetic vulnerability
– Mental health conditions (depression, anxiety, trauma)
– Environmental and peer pressure
– Stress, unresolved grief, or low self-worth
– Poor coping mechanisms
